Week 1 Vol 2

The Truth

10 SEP 13 VOL 2

Well, I don’t know if we have all caught our breath yet, but what an exciting week 1. Before I get into my five truths of week one, I want to give a shout out to the Steelers. Losing 3 starters in week 1 to ACL tears is absolutely the worst way to start off the season. Now that we are a full week in, there is plenty to talk about. From Peyton’s performance, to the Texans epic halftime transformation, we have a ton to break down.
1. Broncos/Ravens- HOLY HELL!!! Seven touchdown passes? Ok, we all know what Peyton is capable of, but seriously Baltimore? That defense and the lack there of, looked absolutely atrocious. You can’t not put pressure on Peyton and expect to stop him. The offensive play calling was almost as bad. You have to utilize Ray Rice especially as thin as the WR corps is.  I know all four AFC north teams lost, but it’s going to be a long season in Baltimore.
2. Saints/Falcons-Lets not over analyze this game too much. First, you have to remember that these teams know each other inside and out and literally have built their teams just to stop each other. The division games expose more weaknesses than strengths and that’s why they mirror each other in so many phases of the game. The Falcons will rebound to take that division, and the Saints and their defense will be exposed as the season goes on.
3. Packers/Niners- This one ended up being the most intriguing game in the end. The pressure was put on Kaepernick heavily and he lived up to it in week 1. On the other hand, the Packers are going to the super bowl? Yea right…not after that performance. They were sloppy in all three phases of the game. They must sharpen up that o-line and Dom Capers has to put a fire in that defense, or they are not even making the playoffs.
4. Giants/Cowboys- Easy cowboys’ fans don’t go printing your super bowl shirts yet. This was by far the worst game of week 1. These two teams looked like they were fighting each other for last place in the division. Dallas, you forced six, count them, SIX turnovers and only turned them into ten points. The Giants will sharpen up and, I believe, still take the division. Dallas, you got the win but there is no possible way that you are proud of the way your team performed.
5. Texans/Chargers- WOW! Man, if I stay up for a game that late, last night’s game makes it worth it. The first half Houston had every possible break go against them, not to mention their defense couldn’t stop a nose bleed. Then halftime happened and the defense got off the bus and put up a dominant performance. For them to be a super bowl pick, I believe they fought through major adversity that 28 other teams couldn’t even dream of. Philip Rivers, last night was on you and that was the second time you have given up a twenty-plus point lead.
Those are my five truths from week 1. Now let’s settle in for a long and exciting season now that we have wrapped up a stellar opening weekend. I will be back on Thursday for my five truths for week two match-ups. Until then, I’ll be on the fantasy waiver wire looking to improve on my 3-2 week one performance. Hopefully I’ll find the dark horse sleeper that will propel me to a 4-1 or even a 5-0 week two.

Week 1 Vol 1

The Truth

05 SEP 13 VOL 1

So, here we are like a 10 year old on Christmas Eve.  Ahhhh yes, football is back! Lets all take a deep breath and be thankful to the football gods that we made it through another grueling offseason. I know, I know, football has been back since late July. It’s not the same and you know it! You can only enjoy the preseason if you are a hardcore fan like myself when you can actually enjoy watching the depth on your team develop before your eyes.  Now on the eve of kickoff, let me give you five things to watch for in week one.
1.       Broncos/Ravens- My first concern is not what the mainstream media is constantly talking about.  It’s actually Peyton’s arm. After watching him throw this preseason, his lack of velocity is really showing at 38. With him having concrete cleats, the Ravens must keep constant pressure.
2.       Seahawks/Panthers- Can the ‘hawks break their cross-country curse? The truth is that this curse is going to have to be broken by that ferocious D. Plain and simple; Stop Cam and have Wilson put up 21 points and the curse is broken. (I believe it will be broken)
3.       Falcons/Saints- Ok, Ok, Sean Payton is back. Unfortunately, Their D still isn’t. Rob Ryan has a long way to go. The key is can Osi and that pass rush keep up with Brees all day and have him running all day? Both teams have an elite offense but the Falcons pass rush is a concern.
4.       Niners/Packers-Is Kaep going to live up to the hype? This year we are going to see him throw a lot. It’s the NFL, the read option will be figured out. But, has Dom Capers figured out his Defense? The way Clay Mathews is talking, apparently he has. Even with San Fran being thin on WR’s, I don’t believe Dom can stop them.
5.       Giants/Cowboys- We all know the issues with uncle Jerry. Those aside, it’s still going to be a long, miserable season. The G-men have never lost in Jerry world and they are not about to start. The lack of leadership and having too many playcallers will show early and often. You can’t put that on top of Romo’s choking abilities.
Those are my top five story lines to watch for in week 1. I could go on for each and every game, but lets be honest, you have to get back to stressing out about who to start in your fantasy league this week. Trust me, I’m in five leagues and there is nothing better than getting that big week one victory over that one guy who has been trash talking since last December. After you set your rosters , the one truth you must follow is just sit back with an ice cold brew and enjoy meaningful football!
